Obituary of John Obal

John Obal, 89, formerly of Scranton, died Sunday at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore, surrounded by his family. His beloved wife, the former Helen Pluski Jedju Obal, died Dec. 14, 2015 and together they were married 34 years.

Born in Taylor, he was the son of the late Michael and Theresa Krisa Obal. John was a 1947 graduate of Taylor High School. Until his retirement, he proudly worked for APA Transport as a clerk for many years. John was a lifelong faithful and devoted parishioner of St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, West Scranton, where he was always lending a helping hand at the many church functions, especially  making the pierogi. John also volunteered many hours at Telespond, the Humane Society and Allied Services. After the death of his wife, he joined the Taylor Senior Citizens, where he made many friendships. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Surviving are two daughters, Beverly Adomiak and husband, Michael, Old Forge; and Debra DeSanto, Lake Mary, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Anne DeMarco and husband, Ronald, Moscow; four grandchildren, Michael Adomiak and wife, Stephanie; Jeffrey Adomiak and fiancée, Katie Loscombe; Cara and Derek De Santo; two stepgrandchildren, Tanya Bray and husband, Brian; and Ronald DeMarco and fiancée, Dominica Fox; numerous great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Tillie Gnall and Mary Haykel; and five brothers, George, Michael, Roman, Joseph and Alexander.

The family would like to acknowledge the care and support given to their father by Dr. Darlene Dunay and Hospice of the Sacred Heart, as well as The Jewish Home of NEPA.

Family and friends are invited to attend John’s funeral which will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in the Semian Funeral Home, 704 Union St., Taylor, with services by the Rev. Philip Harendza, St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery, Taylor.

Friends may call Thursday, 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church 1006 Howell St. Scranton, 18504. To share memories or extend condolences, visit the funeral home website.
