Obituary of Elizabeth Basalyga

Elizabeth “Betti” Basalyga, of Clarks Summit, died Tuesday evening at Regional Hospital of Scranton. Her beloved husband, Russell Sr., died April 1, 1977.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late George and Anna Madzin Selepetz. Betti was a graduate of West Scranton High School, class of 1948. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Lord Label East, Dunmore. She was a parishioner of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, Scranton, where she enjoyed singing in the church choir and lending a helping hand at making perogies. Her family was the center of her life and her dog, Chloe, brought her much joy.

Surviving are two sons, Russell Jr., Clarks Summit; and Robert and wife, Ebby, Mansfield; a daughter, Barbara Brojack and husband, Gregory, Tuckerton, N.J.; three grandchildren, Christine Zalewski and husband, Bill; Russell Basalyga III and wife, Brandy; and Shawn Michael Basalyga and wife, Trisha; two great-grandchildren, Madison and Reese Zalewski; two sisters, Anna Balasa, Maine; and Helen Shutack, Royersford; nieces, nephews and cousins.

A brother, George, and two sisters, Mary Chlebowski and Irene Babey, preceded her in death.

Family and friends are invited to attend Betti’s funeral, which will begin on Saturday at 10:15 a.m. from the Semian Funeral Home, 704 Union St., Taylor, followed by services at 11 a.m. in St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, Jefferson and Vine Street, Scranton, by the Rev. Daniel Vaskalis, Betti's Pastor. Interment will follow in Abington Hills Cemetery, South Abington Township.  

Friends may call Friday 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Panachida services by Rev. Daniel Vaskalis will be held at 6:30 p.m.
