Obituary of Joseph Strok

Joseph Strok Sr., of the Greenwood section of Moosic, died Monday morning at the Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre. He is survived by his wife the former Dorothy Bernacik and they had been married for 59 years. Born in August 24, 1921, in Old Forge, he the son of the late Alexis and Anastasia Zebrun Strok, was a 1939 graduate of Old Forge High School and Lackawanna College. For over thirty years, Joe faithfully served our country during WWII, Korean conflict and Vietnam War, retiring in 1972 as a chief warrant officer. During this time, he was decorated with numerous citation and awards including the Bronze Star Medal. After retirement from the Army, Joseph worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Welfare as head of security at the Clarks Summit State Hospital. He was a faithful parishioner of St. Stephen's Orthodox Church, Old Forge. Also surviving are two sons, Joseph Jr. and wife, Sherry, Moosic; Paul, Maryland; a sister Anna Strok, Old Forge;five grandchildren, Tyler, Julianna and Brandon Strok, Nicholas Sabitus and Dominique Juliano; a great granddaughter McKayla White; Nieces and nephews. A grandson, Joseph III, fiver brothers, Anthony, Alexander, Michael, Walter and James Dimitri Strok and a sister Vera Kearney preceded him in death. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 am in St. Stephen's Orthodox Church, Old Forge, to be celebrated by the Rev. German Ciuba. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Michael's Orthodox Cemetery, Old Forge; Friends ay call Wednesday 5-7 at the Semian Funeral Home, 704 union St., Taylor.
