Obituary of Michael Sokol

Michael Sokol Sr., of Old Forge, died Friday morning at the Taylor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He is survived his wife, the former Helen Timko. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary October 15. Born in Old Forge, he was son of the late Anthony & Johanna Sokol. He was a WWII Army veteran stationed with Company A 26th Medical Battalion. During World War II, Mike received numerous decorations and citations. Prior to his retirement in 1979, he was employed by Trane Corporation for many years. He was a lifelong and devoted parishioner of St. Michael's Orthodox Church and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4954 both of Old Forge. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and pop pop. An avid Yankee's fan, Mike's favorite pastime was watching baseball. Also surviving are two sons: Michael and companion Joann Leone; Gregory and wife, Dr. Marie all of Old Forge; six grandchildren, Jeremy, Melissa, Kelly, Amy and Brian Sokol; Robert Mulkerin; a sister, Jule Cross, Elmira, NY; Nephews & nieces Two brothers, John and Andrew, and three sisters: Tessie, Anna and Mary Sokol, preceded him in death. The funeral will be Monday at 8:45 a.m. from the Semian Funeral Home, 704 Union St., Taylor, followed by services at 9:30 a.m. in St. Michael's Orthodox Church, 512 Summer St., Old Forge, to be celebrated by the Rev. John Soucek, rector. Interment with military honors will take place in the parish cemetery, Old Forge.
